Jack & Lucy

Jack & Lucy - this young label stands for high-quality and sustainable products that are handmade. The preferred material of Jack & Lucy is wood, which is skillfully combined with other materials to create highly functional and attractive kitchen utensils. The product range includes the simple and beautiful "Essentials" cutting boards, the classic "Pure" boards, and the professional workstation. Wooden magnetic knife strips and the "Allblacks" cutting boards made of Richlite round out the Jack & Lucy assortment.

Jack was a carpenter and hopelessly in love with the beautiful Lucy. However, this love was unrequited. He wrote her long letters and even poems, but the beautiful Lucy did not want to hear the poor Jack. So he went away and, to distract himself, took a piece of oak wood and started making a cutting board. He devoted all his attention to the workpiece, but his heart was consumed with longing for Lucy. Then he had an idea: he lovingly shaped the handle of the cutting board into a heart. He sawed, planed, and sanded the board until it seemed perfect to him. Then he gathered his courage and took it to Lucy. Lucy was very taken with this gift, because she recognized how much work and time Jack had put into this simple yet perfect cutting board for her. She fell in love with Jack and... Happy End!!

Yes, that's how the beginning of the company's history could have happened, with the title characters Jack and Lucy, but we admit - it's all made up. Behind Jack & Lucy is the creative duo Alex and Jan. Jan, the carpenter, takes care of product development and manufacturing, and Alex is responsible for marketing, sales, and everything else.

About Jack & Lucy

The brand Jack & Lucy was founded in 2017. Under this label, the team led by Alex and Jan designs and produces timeless home accessories, lighting, and furniture. Handcrafted in the production facilities in Solingen and Domaszék, Hungary, the high-quality and sustainable products are made to accompany and inspire their buyers for a lifetime. In addition to the simple design, the focus is on the selection of woods and the careful processing of the products. All corners, surfaces, and edges - even on the smallest parts - are meticulously sanded and oiled. This gives the products a wonderful look and feel. Wood is the material of choice for Jack & Lucy. Mainly domestic or European woods, such as ash, oak, and walnut, are used. But other materials - steel, glass, felt, and concrete - that combine well with the wooden objects are also used.

The additional location in Domaszék, Hungary - in addition to the headquarters in Solingen - is due to the old friendship with Árpád Szörényi, which has existed since their shared study time. Árpád also lives this perfectionism when working with wood. The German-Hungarian partnership is based on identical values: high demands on quality, love for traditional craftsmanship, and mutual trust. In addition, Hungary offers wood of extremely good quality, which is sorted and dried according to the specifications of the Jack & Lucy team.

In the development of the products, wood is used as originally as possible. For example, the cutting boards from the PURE series have one thing in common - unlike almost all products from other manufacturers: they are made from a single piece of wood. You won't find any glue joints, as is common with glued boards. At Jack & Lucy, high-quality unique pieces are created, sometimes with a calm, sometimes with a lively grain. The production from a single piece requires a consistently higher quality of wood compared to boards that are glued from narrow strips of 4 - 6 cm. Only A-grades are used, which allow only the smallest, finest knots. This enables sustainable production without too much waste and gives the boards a natural, honest look.

Jack & Lucy MAGNETS: Magnetic Knife Strips and Boards

The Jack & Lucy Magnet Knife Holders “MAGNETS” keep your knives securely and firmly on the wall – thanks to extra-strong neodymium magnets. You can choose between two rectangular knife strips in different lengths and two square knife boards in various wood finishes. Depending on the size, the knife strips can hold a different number of knives: you can find details on this in the respective product description. The “MAGNETS” are made of solid oak wood and are bolted to the wall using a metal suspension; screws and dowels are conveniently included. An inset back panel serves as a cover for the magnets and creates the look of a shadow gap: the knife strips and boards thus appear to “float” on the wall.

Jack & Lucy ESSENTIALS: One Board for All Purposes

One of the most frequently used tools in the kitchen is undoubtedly the cutting board. Whether you are cutting juicy roasts or chopping fresh vegetables, slicing bread or chopping herbs – you always need a cutting board. It should be practical, ideally indestructible, and also gentle on your knives, and of course visually appealing. Here it is: The Essential by Jack & Lucy. Or rather – THE “Essentials”. Because as different as the tasks are that your favorite board has to handle, so are the versions of this wooden board collection. The double-sided “Reversibles” have a smooth working and presentation surface on one side – if you want to use the board as a serving board – and a surrounding juice groove on the other side, for drip-free cutting of meat or very water- or juice-rich fruits and vegetables. In contrast, the “Stationarys” have a smooth serving/cutting surface on the top and non-slip rubber feet screwed onto the bottom for a secure stand. The Bread Board has milled longitudinal grooves that catch crumbs when cutting bread and baguettes.

The “Essentials” cutting boards are available in sizes S, M, and L, and are optionally made of oak long-grain or oak end-grain. All boards are finely sanded and food-safe oiled. To ensure long-lasting enjoyment of your board from the “Essentials” series, we recommend reading our magazine page “Care instructions for wooden cutting boards”.

Jack & Lucy ALLBLACKS: Cutting boards made of Richlite

The preferred material of our carpenters at Jack & Lucy is clearly wood. As a worthy alternative, the “Allblacks” cutting boards made of Richlite are available in the range. Richlite is a so-called wood fiber laminate. In the production of this laminate, wood fibers, paper fibers, and recycled materials are pressed into a plate with resin. The resulting black-colored material is ideal for the “Allblacks” kitchen cutting boards: it is extremely resistant and heat-resistant up to approx. 175 °C. The cutting boards made from it have antibacterial properties, are gentle on the blade, and are even dishwasher-safe. Moreover, the “Allblacks” look cool and can basically be processed like wooden boards, meaning you can sand them down and oil them for maintenance after extended use.

Jack & Lucy Workstation ONE: The multifunctional cutting board

Jan is a carpenter with many years of experience. However, he spent two years of his professional life not in a carpentry workshop, but in the restaurant kitchen of his parents. There he learned what demands professional chefs place on their tools and how essential a well-organized workplace is for the professional workflow in the kitchen. The task for the Workstation project was clear: Jan wanted to use his experience from professional gastronomy and transport it to the private kitchen. He has developed a product that shortens paths, simplifies work processes and better structures the workplace:
Workstation ONE - the mother of all cutting boards.

The multifunctional cutting board combines and optimizes the processes in your home kitchen with unique features. The Workstation ONE has a reversible cutting board. On the meat side, you will find a wide juice groove with a slope - it serves to collect the juices that escape from the meat in the stainless steel tray. The other side, the vegetable side, is smooth and offers plenty of space for relaxed chopping. The cutting board is mobile and also ideal for serving.

For all foods that you do not want to cut on wood, a Richlite cutting board is integrated into the Workstation, which you can pull out of the base with one handle and place on the cutting board. Richlite cutting boards are made of environmentally friendly wood fiber laminate. Like wood, it is also a piece of nature, but dishwasher safe, heat-resistant up to almost 180 degrees, antibacterial, and gentle on blades.

Under the cutting board, there is a pull-out stainless steel container. You use it to collect meat juices, for cuttings, or kitchen waste. And you can easily transport everything you've chopped to the pan, salad bowl, or compost. With the integrated, magnetic knife holder, you always have your favorite knives that you use daily at your workplace. The surface magnet of the knife holder is strong, and the storage is absolutely knife-friendly.

The Workstation ONE is made of oak. Oak is a hard wood that naturally has an antibacterial effect due to its high tannin content. Oak is therefore ideal as a cutting board, as the tannins make the board almost germ-free within a few hours after cleaning.

You can choose between two different types of wood for the Workstation ONE: Long-grain oak or end-grain oak. Long-grain oak is the king of woods for this purpose, while end-grain oak is the premium version. End-grain wood is made from the cross-section of a tree and is often used for butcher blocks. Sharp blades penetrate the surface between the fibers when cutting, but do not damage it to the extent that a surface parallel to the fibers would. This minimizes the removal of wood fibers and extends the life of the cutting board.

All Jack & Lucy boards are, of course, food-safe and oiled with a bio-oil. The oil is a mixture of linseed oil, orange oil, and resin.
The Workstation ONE is available in two different sizes.

Jack & Lucy Workstation BLACK

As an alternative to the Workstation ONE, there is the Workstation BLACK from Jack & Lucy with a dishwasher-safe cutting board made of Richlite. In terms of workflow, this workstation is similar to the premium ONE version, but they differ mainly in the materials used.

The body of the Workstation BLACK is made of CDF. The abbreviation CDF stands for Compact Density Fiberboard and refers to a black-colored fiberboard. This material is compactly compressed, food-safe oiled, and moisture-resistant. The cutting station includes two drawers of different sizes made of high-quality stainless steel. The stainless steel drawers serve as drip-proof containers for cut vegetables or meat pieces. The stainless steel trays are also perfect for collecting cutting waste and cleaning residues. This keeps the actual cutting board empty and ready for use.

The cutting board is made of Richlite, a wood fiber laminate used for all Jack & Lucy ALLBLACKS cutting boards. This black-colored material is ideal for cutting boards because it is very resistant but still flexible and therefore gentle on blades. In addition, it is absolutely practical because Richlite cutting boards can be put in the dishwasher after use. When developing the Workstation BLACK, the size of the board was chosen specifically to fit in standard dishwashers.

The material Richlite has antibacterial properties, is heat resistant up to approx. 175 °C and can be treated like wood, i.e. sanded and oiled.

The cutting board of the Workstation BLACK can be used on both sides, with two differently designed sides: One side is smooth and offers plenty of space for work. It is also used when you want to use the board as a chic serving board. The second side has a deep juice groove with a slope towards the stainless steel bowl to catch meat or roast juice or for drip-free cutting of very watery fruits and vegetables.

The Workstation BLACK stands on non-slip feet, which also protect the surface. This cutting station quickly becomes your favorite workplace in your kitchen, because it is super practical and the combination of cool black & shiny stainless steel looks extremely good.

Jack & Lucy PURE: Handmade cutting, serving and snack boards made from a single piece of oak

In contrast to the products of many other manufacturers, the boards of the PURE series by Jack & Lucy have a characteristic design feature: They are made from a single piece of grown oak. You won't find any glue joints here. PURE boards are unique, sometimes with a calmer, sometimes with a lively grain. The production from one piece requires - compared to boards that are glued from narrow strips of 4 - 6 cm - a significantly higher wood quality. At Jack & Lucy, A-sortings are used, which only allow the smallest, finest branches. This enables sustainable production, without too much waste, and gives the boards a natural, honest look.

The determination of the ten different board formats is based on various possible functions: The long, narrow boards (such as the cutting board 75/13.5) are more suitable as serving and tapas boards, while the wider ones (like the cutting board 75/20) are excellent for cutting and serving. The cutting board 43/13.5 can also be used as a breakfast board, the 58/20 is a great all-rounder, the BK1 edge board is the rustic-romantic version and is also suitable as a cutting or serving board.

Proper cleaning and regular care are important for your wooden board: In our "Magazine" section, we have written a competent guide on this topic: Care instructions for wooden cutting boards

Sea salt and spice cans from Jack & Lucy with glass insert and magnetic lid

The right pinch of sea salt, in other words the perfect amount, can really only be measured with your fingers, right? The salt and spice can from Jack & Lucy is perfect for storing sea salt. The spice can is made of oak, food-safe oiled, and a glass insert that can be easily removed for cleaning. The can lid with magnetic joint is easy to slide open and still keeps the spice well sealed.
Also available as a set in a gift box with 125 grams of Fleur de Sel de Guérande.

Jack & Lucy Sticks: The somewhat different pot coasters

Jack & Lucy reduces the topic of pot coasters to the bare essentials. Nine natural, finely sanded oak rods serve - laid side by side - as a base. By loosely arranging them, you can adapt the surface to any pot size or pan shape. Protects your dining table or worktop from heat or scratches. The sticks invite you to play, for ever new arrangements, and look super creative.
For storage, they are held together by rubber bands in anthracite, red and yellow.

So, where does the name Jack & Lucy actually come from?

Jan's son used to love reading children's books, and one of his favourite books was the "Adventure" series by Enid Blyton. The two main characters of the series were called Jack and Lucy. The two company founders liked this combination of names and the name for the label was born...
Perhaps not as romantic as our imagined version at the beginning, but true nonetheless.
