Skeppshult

ABBA, Volvo and furniture - that's what Sweden is known for. The town of Skeppshult in the Swedish province of Jönköping County is not quite as well-known to most people. However, insiders light up at the mention of this name: the brand Skeppshult has been producing high-quality cast iron cookware using traditional craftsmanship in the Swedish town since 1906. Here, pans and roasting dishes are created that are second to none. Cast iron from the Skeppshult brand is made from natural raw materials, is ideal for cooking and frying, and has a long lifespan. Furthermore, it gets better with every use - something that sets it apart from furniture …

Cookware from Skeppshult scores points for its excellent material properties: cast iron has excellent heat conductivity, even heat distribution, and very good heat retention. It is suitable for both slow and gentle cooking (braising) as well as for searing. The patina that forms during use acts like a natural non-stick coating and can even enhance the flavor of the food. In addition, cast iron from the Skeppshult brand is robust and durable when properly cared for.

Butch carries Skeppshult cookware such as pans, roasting dishes, and oven dishes as well as accessories such as the spice collection and various kitchen utensils. You can find the Skeppshult Original, Skeppshult Järn, Skeppshult Traditional, Skeppshult Walnut, Skeppshult Professional, Skeppshult Lift, and Skeppshult Noir series in the shop. ABOUT SKEPPSHULT

From raw iron to cookware

Faster - higher - further. Today's time is characterized by rapid change, short-lived trends lead to fashionable products and the result is often cheap mass instead of class. However, another way of thinking and acting is increasingly recognizable: more and more people are looking for the genuine, unadulterated, value tradition, origin and quality. They want transparency and traceability in food and products. This philosophy is also followed by the brand Skeppshult. The manufactory has been producing cookware and household items made of cast iron in the eponymous town of Skeppshult in Sweden since 1906 - using traditional manufacturing methods and by hand.

Everything starts with glowing cast iron

Raw iron is heated in induction furnaces together with other metals to 1,500 degrees (the recipe for this mixture ratio is carefully guarded at Skeppshult). This creates glowing cast iron, the basic material for Skeppshult roasters and pans. Special casting molds are needed to pour liquid iron. Metal molds would not withstand the extreme temperatures of liquid cast iron. Sand molds are used here, which Skeppshult makes itself.

Casting iron is manual labor

Producing these sand molds, which are pressed with high pressure, requires a lot of specialized knowledge. The composition of the sand determines the stability of the mold and ensures the correct surface structure for the later cast iron product. A mold consists of two halves that form a cavity in the middle. At Skeppshult, a specialist pours the liquid iron by hand into the cavity of the mold. To meet the high quality standards that Skeppshult sets for its products, a lot of skill and expertise from the iron caster is necessary.

Each product is unique

When the cast iron has cooled and solidified, the two sand mold halves are separated and the rough casting is revealed. Each sand mold can only be used once - making each Skeppshult product unique. None are exactly the same in detail.

The finishing touch

The products, such as pans and roasters, go through their final stage in production. For example, casting residues and small irregularities are removed. To protect the cast iron from external influences such as rust and to achieve a non-stick effect during later use, the items are seasoned with locally produced rapeseed oil. Rapeseed oil is heat-resistant and almost tasteless. Finally, the handles are screwed on, and the products are ready for international shipping.

Responsibility and Sustainability

Skeppshult is committed to the environment and climate: The energy required for the production of Skeppshult products is obtained from wind and hydropower. Cast iron products from the factory consist exclusively of natural materials, and Skeppshult uses rapeseed oil from the region for seasoning the items. Skeppshult products undergo strict quality control. Items that do not meet the high standards are sorted out. The cast iron is melted down and processed into new cookware. Even the sand from the casting molds is recycled: Since each casting mold can only be used once, the sand is reprocessed after casting and used for new molds.

The best comes last

Skeppshult cast iron products actually get better with every use. The more you use them, the more you promote the formation of the coveted patina, the natural non-stick and flavor layer in cast iron. What other material for cookware can claim to get even better over time?

All objective and comprehensible quality reasons that speak for the use of cast iron as cookware. For us at Butch, there is another reason why Skeppshult is one of our favorite brands: cast iron is simply beautiful. Or rather, simple AND beautiful. This material is so genuine and sincere. Pure and original in its appearance. And reliable when it matters. Heavy, made for eternity. Even grandmother cooked us with cast iron pots, so there is probably a little melancholic memory resonating. A large, massive roaster on the stove symbolizes home, stands for shared meals and, in our opinion, has style, even on the set table. Cooking with family, enjoying with friends, and expressing lifestyle:
“Vi älskar Skeppshult!”, which means “We love Skeppshult!” in Swedish.
