Blockwerk Knife Block Manufacturing

"It's a gift to be able to build something that other people like so much that they want to take it home," reads the quote on the Blockwerk website.

The exceptional designer knife blocks from Blockwerk are truly impressive at first glance. You gain even more respect for the skills of the two Blockwerk craftsmen, Marcel Palme and Jens Zander, with a glimpse behind the scenes of the workshop. At Butch, we want to give you an idea of HOW the knife blocks are created there. That's why we've put together a small image gallery for you here.

The Blockwerk Manufactory from Rödermark

With Blockwerk, we have found a kindred partner who has a similarly angular charm and a clear view of things. Butch believes that you can't process a piece of wood much better.

The Blockwerk craftsmen Marcel Palme and Jens Zander manufacture knife blocks from noble woods such as oak, walnut or zebrano. And only knife blocks!

The basic product, wood, is the decisive factor. Only if the wood completely meets Blockwerk's wishes and high requirements, will it be further processed.

If no suitable wood is available, no blocks are produced. "Um, but!?"Sorry, that's just the way it is."

Marcel Palme and Jens Zander

Good things come to those who wait, as the saying goes.

The elaborate production takes time. The wood needs to be dried, cut and glued. The recesses for the magnet and stand need to be carved out, the magnet inserted and the plates joined together. Between almost every step, it goes into the press to keep the joint as minimal as possible. Everything is done by hand and with the utmost care.

The beauty of it is that you can't tell from looking at the blocks. They stand there so naturally, confidently, and unpretentiously. But they have a trick up their sleeve, or rather, inside. Magnets are hidden inside, keeping the knives securely in place but out of sight.

Thanks to the blocks' high weight and non-slip bottom, the knives can be removed with one hand, without any wobbling!

The Blockwerk range at Butch:

Currently, Blockwerk offers four different models in various variations:

The Monolith Block

The masterpiece! A knife block for up to four knives with a heavy steel base. The block can be freely rotated 360 degrees, over and over again. This ensures that the required knife is always within reach. The Monolith has often been copied, but it remains unmatched. The Monolith Block is available in walnut, oak, and smoked oak woods.

The Monolith Block Strandgut

Monolith 2.0. Also for up to four knives with a heavy steel base. And here too, the block can be freely rotated 360 degrees. However, the wood and base have been elaborately reworked by hand, with an axe, file, and whatever else the Blockwerk craftsmen had at their disposal. This beautiful block actually looks like a piece of driftwood that miraculously serves as an excellent knife block. The Strandgut is offered in the walnut and oak wood variants. The steel base receives an antique finish and could easily come from a previous century.

The 8-Block

The latest development is another hit! Up to eight knives (four per side) are held invisibly and securely as usual. The wide and heavy stainless steel base also allows for one-handed removal of the knives without any wobbling. The wood options are oak and walnut in combination with untreated, coated, and white-painted steel bases.

If you are wondering now why you have not heard of this extraordinary manufacturer until now, you are not alone. The Blockwerker do not drum, they are rather moderately interested in prices and awards. Although they should be showered with them.

No, Blockwerk produces its knife blocks and cutting boards very quietly, with the greatest care, precision, and a touch of love. That's why we love Blockwerk and send a quick prayer of thanks to heaven that there are still such great manufactories as Blockwerk!
